Here is the opening scene: I will post the next scent later tonight on the REAM website above. It's not a paid subscription and the entire story will be a free read. Enjoy!
Introduction
“What kind of place is this, Father?”
The Wolf-shifter, Argyll Duncan, looked at his five-year-old daughter with concern, wondering if she had gotten hurt while he wasn’t watching. They’d been walking in the alley behind their house. A cramped brown brick building with only a small patch of grass in the back for her play-yard. Surely, she’d not hurt herself there?
“What did you do?” He asked, kneeling beside her.
She returned his gaze; her round, cinnamon eyes stared up at him. Her pale skin, covered with a smattering of brownish freckles. Her riot of strawberry curls surrounding her heart-shaped face reminded him of someone. Another memory lost?
“Is something wrong, Papa?”
“I think I’ve forgotten something important, is all.” He sighed, sitting back on his heels. “That’s been happening to many people lately. Not to worry. I’m sure it’ll come back to us soon.”
“Good. Now, tell me about this place, our home..”
“Ah, yes. This is Underworld City.”
“An odd name, don’t you think?”
“I do. But that’s not important right now. Our home is what’s known as a conduit realm. A portal that connects other realms to each other.”
“So, an important place?”
“Yes. I suppose so, though all the portals—we call them veils—are closed now.”
“Good. We wouldn’t want just anybody coming here,” she said in a very resolute tone.
Duncan grinned. “Of course not, but there was a time when we had many visitors. Still, when we had many folk here, magical and non-magical, it was a good time. All shifters, warlocks, druids, fae, humans, witches…”. There were more, but at the moment, he couldn’t recall them all. More missing memories?
“What’s wrong, Papa?”
He shook his head. There was an emptiness inside him. Something was missing. No, someone was missing. But who?
Everyone have a good week and I'll chat with you next time!
Happy Reading!
Pam
